Holiday Mode – Tips for Better Sleep While Travelling
Written by Maria Bæktoft van Weert, sleep coach and physiotherapist
Summer holidays are just around the corner – and for most families, that means time off and travel. If your holiday is coming up, here are some simple tips to help create the best possible sleep environment for your little one – no matter where you’re heading.
Every child reacts differently when routines change. That’s why preparing your child’s sleep space while travelling can make a big difference – and is key to helping everyone get a good night’s sleep.
How to create the best sleep environment for your child on holiday:
- Use white noise: White noise helps block out background sounds and can make it easier for your child to fall asleep.
- Keep the room dark and cool: Consider bringing portable blackout blinds. The room should ideally be completely dark. Darkness during the day can also help keep the room cooler – ideally around 18–20°C.
- Make it feel like home: Bring familiar sleep items like their favourite cuddly toy, blanket, bedding, nightlight, or bedtime storybook. A baby monitor can also be useful.
- Stick to your usual routine as much as possible: Try to maintain consistent rhythms throughout the day – like mealtimes, naps and bedtime.
- Follow your regular bedtime routine: Even in a new place, doing the same steps as you do at home signals to your child that it’s time for sleep. A familiar routine can help them settle more easily, wherever you are.
Back home again?
Get back into your usual daily rhythm as soon as you can. Most children will quickly adjust and return to the routines they know.
